Stopping spam in a Telegram chat: what to enable, in order

Spam in a Telegram chat comes from new accounts: join, post a link, leave. Protection has two layers — Telegram's built-in settings and a moderation bot that greets newcomers with a captcha and deletes messages by your rules. Here's what to switch on, in order.

Step 1. Telegram's built-in settings

In group settings you can enable slow mode — a pause between messages from one member — and limit what members can send. For large groups Telegram offers an aggressive mode of its own anti-spam that deletes suspicious messages automatically; Telegram sets the minimum group size for it.

Step 2. A moderation bot

  • Button captcha for newcomers: spam bots don't pass it.
  • Stop words and regular expressions: links, ads, profanity.
  • Anti-flood: a limit on message frequency.
  • Penalty ladder: warning → mute → ban.
  • Night mode and raid protection when new accounts flood in.

Which rights to give the bot

Delete messages and restrict members — that's enough. A bot with every right is an unnecessary risk.

FAQ

Is there a free anti-spam bot?

In TGStudio moderation is included in every plan, including Free. The bot is your own, created in @BotFather.

Won't a captcha scare real people off?

Pressing a button takes a second. A person who came to talk will do it; a spam bot won't.

The bot deleted a normal message — what now?

Find the rule that fired and narrow it: drop an overly broad stop word or loosen anti-flood.
